10 reasons to go self-catered in Scotland

Holiday your way in the Highlands

26th October 2021

While hotels definitely serve a purpose, there are so many reasons why self-catered is the way to go! We take a look at all the benefits of making a caravan or lodge your basecamp to adventure in the Scottish Highlands.

Home from home
Holiday lodges and caravans come complete with all the home comforts you’re used to. From kitchens kitted out with all mod cons to cosy lounge areas with electric fires, you can put your feet up and feel right at home from the moment you arrive.

Better for groups
The more of you there are, the better value self-catering becomes. Look out for lodges where the sofas turn into beds that can sleep extra people too as this makes it even more cost-effective.

Social space – or not
Hotel rooms are pretty limiting with no room to do much else other than get dressed and go to bed. Having a lounge, kitchen and diner means everyone can spread out and not feel like they’re in each other’s way all the time. People can have their own alone time, or hang out together – a recipe for a successful and argument-free holiday!

No time constraints
Once you’ve got the keys you can come and go as you please. No fixed times for breakfast, no curfew – how you spend your time is up to you. Our larger lodges have multiple bathrooms meaning no morning bottlenecks either – giving you more time to relax and enjoy your holiday, your way.

Cook and eat together
You can’t beat cooking up a storm with friends and family and all eating together around the table – make it a sociable experience from start to finish and make some memories! Check out some of these great local food suppliers.

Flexible food
Having your own kitchen is worth its weight in gold on holiday. It’s ideal for fussy eater family members and can end up saving you a fortune in food – hotel breakfasts and eating out sure does add up, especially in a big group. Enjoy unlimited cuppas, quick and easy breakfasts and rustle up some butties and fill up your flask ready for your day’s adventures. Don’t feel like cooking? You can still go out and enjoy the best local restaurants – just because you can cook doesn’t mean you have to!

Whatever the weather
No one loves the Scottish Highlands more than we do, but well – we do get the odd rainy day! There’re are plenty of indoor days out nearby but if you want to have a movie day or break out the board games and just enjoy some quality time in the company of your nearest and dearest it’s all so easy when you’re in a caravan or lodge.

Better for little ones
Being stuck in a hotel room with young kids gets old fast! You’ll want to be out and about until bedtime and then if you’re all sharing a hotel room the adults are a bit trapped come evening. In a lodge or caravan, the kids can have their own room (or rooms!) and then after bedtime, the grownups can relax together for a bit of kid-free time in the living and dining area.

Outside space
All our lodges, caravans and glamping pods come with a private decked area where you can sit outside and make the most of the incredible view. Whether for a morning coffee, an evening glass of wine or a spot of al fresco dining you’ll love making the most of it. It’s definitely something you don’t get with a hotel room! And of course, some of our lodges come with luxurious outdoor hot tubs so you can really unwind and soak away your cares outside.

Dogs welcome
At Ben Nevis Holiday Park all our accommodation is dog-friendly so you can bring your four-legged friend with you for your Scottish Highland adventure. No paying for kennels – or being sad to leave them behind! We’re surrounded by amazing walks in this part of the world, which everyone is sure to love whether they have two legs or four!
