Just four miles north of Fort William, is a small village with a BIG staircase lock!
Neptune’s Staircase at Banavie is the longest staircase lock in Scotland. Over a quarter of mile, a flight of eight locks raise the canal by a whopping 19 metres / 62 feet!
Like the Glenfinnan Viaduct, it’s a spectacle that combines both the best in human engineering, and nature’s finest, overlooked as it is by breathtaking Ben Nevis.
It takes around 90 minutes for a boat to travel up or down the locks, so after you’ve made the most of the traffic-free walking and cycling paths along the Great Glen Way, take a breather and wonder at Neptune’s Staircase in action!
