Fishing in the
Highlands

Plenty of fish in the lochs

Famous for the heights of its Ben Nevis mountain, many will be surprised at what lies beneath the surfaces in the Scottish Highlands. Don’t be fooled by the flocks of skiers and mountain bikers, because Ben Nevis boasts some of the best fishing locations in the UK.

River Nevis

Running through the heart of the highlands and Glen Nevis, the River Nevis is a wildlife paradise. It feels like something handpicked from a nature documentary and left to the public to explore its serenity and beauty. It can be seen flowing through deep pools and rock beds and its clear cool nature allows it to be an angler’s heaven.

With beautiful backdrops of Ben Nevis stretching way up into the clouds, the setting for your next fishing trip couldn’t get more breathtaking than this. The river is home to such species as salmon, brown and sea trout, eels, and flounder.

Expect to be joined along the river banks by cyclists, walkers, and canoeists, as the River Nevis proves extremely popular with both tourists and locals.

Fort William

Fort William gives you easy access to a number of different lochs and rivers for you to try your fishing hand at. River Garry and River Oich are known for salmon fishing and boast beautiful surroundings – these waters are known to be quite chilly, though.

If you’re after some spectacular wild brown trout, then get yourself on one of the various fleets of boats and sail along the larger lochs of Loch Arkaig, Loch Garry, and Loch Lochy and find yourself nestled away in the trout hotspots in the Lochaber Hills.

It’s not all about salmon or trout, either. To try your angling at species like dogfish, pollack, mackerel, and codling then Loch Lhinnie and Loch Eli are where you should go.

Rivers Farrar and Glass

Running alongside Glen Strathfarrar, both these rivers are part of a 3 beat flowing stream, with the third being River Beauly. Both beats offer spectacular pike, salmon, and brown trout fishing. Don’t be fooled into thinking there’s no Loch Ness monster in these waters, because there’s a big chance you’ll find an aquatic giant attached to the end of your fishing line here.

Hook, line, and sinker

There’s a saying that no matter where in the Highlands you are if you drive 30 minutes in any direction you’re guaranteed to find an angler’s dream river or loch to fish in. And, guess what? The saying is right! The Highlands are off the scales when it comes to providing stunning locations and settings for all fishing fans.
