Fort William makes the perfect location for a magical Christmas escape. The Scottish Highlands are beautiful all year round, but in the winter they are truly breath-taking. Couple the stunning scenery with some cosy self-catering accommodation and you’ve got the recipe for an amazing winter break.
Go for Christmas, and cook-up a feast of wonderful local produce for everyone to enjoy in your well-equipped kitchen. Getaway for ‘Twixmas’ – the perfect time to blow away the cobwebs and walk-off the festive excesses. Or why not join us for Hogmanay, Scotland’s new year celebration – it’s so boisterous that the whole country takes usually takes two days off to celebrate!
Wintry walks
While hiking ‘the Ben’ itself is not advised in adverse conditions, in good weather it’s still doable for the fit and experienced. Climbers might prefer to bag a Munro, a Corbett or a Graham or two, while the less experienced can take their pick from a large number of low-level walks that are accessible even on the snowiest of days. Walk the River Lochy, which runs right alongside our holiday park here at Highland Holidays, enjoy a leisurely amble along the banks of the Caledonian Canal or explore around Glen Nevis and the miles of quiet forest roads. Don’t forget we’re dog-friendly so your four-legged friend can enjoy all the same scenic strolls as you!
Snowy slopes
The winter season at the Nevis Mountain Range usually runs from late December – April, making Christmas and New Year the ideal time to get away for some Scottish snow sports action! (Season varies depending on conditions.) If you’re not a skier or a boarder but still want your fill of snowy scenes – no worries! The Nevis Range Mountain Gondola is an incredible activity in itself, reaching heights of 650 metres up Aonach Mòr, the 8th highest mountain in Britain. Take in the incredible snowy views and breathe in the crisp Scottish mountain air.
Warm your cockles
After your wintry walk, you’ll be wanting a good dose of warm Scottish hospitality. You’ll find it’s in no short supply around these parts, with Fort William offering some fabulous coffee shop and pubs with great food and drink. If you’re partial to a wee dram, Ben Nevis distillery is open Monday to Friday all year round (please double-check in advance). We recommend the Tasting Tour followed by some Scottish home cooking in their restaurant.
Indoor activities
If you get bad weather at this time of year it doesn’t mean your holiday is a non-starter – there’s loads to do in Fort William come rain or shine. Aside from the distillery mentioned above, we recommend (for starters): Three Monkeys Indoor Climbing Centre, bowling at the Nevis Centre (there’s a Soft Play there too), swimming at Lochaber Leisure Centre, Treasures of the Earth Museum, or the Highland Cinema. Or of course you can just cosy up in your accommodation with a Christmas film or favourite family board game and enjoy some quality time together while the weather does its worst.
Hot tubs in winter
Our hot tub lodges are popular all year round! The warm, bubbly waters will keep you toasty even on the coldest night, allowing you to relax with your loved ones and admire the snow-capped peaks by day and starry skies by night. Just make sure you have a large fluffy towel at the ready to wrap up as soon you jump out!
