The west coast of Scotland is studded with scenic places to explore. One such hidden gem is the Knoydart peninsula in Lochaber. And when we say hidden, we mean it! Although it’s on the mainland, no roads connect to it so it can’t be reached by car. Your only options for getting there are a ferry from Mallaig, or a pretty serious hike.
Fort William to Inverie on foot
From where we are in Fort William, you would need to get to Glenfinnan, and from there it’s a 3-day hike through boggy and trackless ground.
If that’s your cup of tea, get in touch with Knoydart Foundation’s Ranger Service to help you plan this serious undertaking which will require a couple of nights wild camping, perhaps bagging a bothy if you’re lucky.
Fort William to Inverie by boat
What’s that you say? It’s not your cup of tea? Well, let us tell you more about the ferry option then. From your base here at Ben Nevis Holiday Park, it’s a one-hour scenic drive to Mallaig, with the latter portion of the drive between Arisaig and Mallaig running right along the stunning coastline of silvery beaches. There’s free parking when you get there.
Alternatively, in the summer months you can catch the Jacobite Steam train to Mallaig from Fort William and enjoy the views free of distractions.
When you arrive at the small fishing village of Mallaig, you need to get the ferry is which £22 return and takes 30-45minutes. It’s a fabulous cruise across the mouth of Loch Nevis where it merges with Loch Hourne, and you’ll enjoy every second! Keep your eyes peeled for harbour seals and otters.
Fall in love with Inverie
Explore the small community of Inverie at your leisure, as well as the famed Old Forge pub, you’ll discover Knoydart Pottery and tearoom, serving up delicious home-baked cakes and bread (don’t miss the scones or tablet!), and do pop in what’s simply known as The Knoydart Shop. This small community-run store is a trove of local art as well as delicacies including Knoydart wild venison and Knoydart brewery ales.
If you want to get about and explore more of the beautiful and remote part of the world, you hire mountain bikes, which are perfect for the single-track routes. Knoydart is a dream for walkers as well, boasting many a munro and Corbett.
The pub!
Onto the main event… The Old Forge Pub. Renowned as the UK’s remotest pub, it’s also famed for its incredible seafood and selection of real ales. Those who have made the walk over the mountain can avail themselves of a shower before they settle in for a well-earned drink, and you might just be lucky enough to catch a bit of an impromptu music session or ceilidh!
The return trip
No doubt time will fly during your visit to Knoydart, but do keep an eye on the ferry times for your return trip. If you’re planning taking the last boat of the day back to Mallaig be sure to book it in advance, as it often fills up to capacity.
