As the days get shorter, it is tempting to stay indoors, where it is cosy and warm, but there are benefits to getting out into the crisp winter air. Plenty of people suffer from the winter blues – taking a stroll is a great way to boost your mood, release endorphins and enjoy the scenic Scottish Highlands.
Nestled at the foot of the country’s tallest mountain, guests are ideally situated to take on the challenge of Scotland’s most famous Munro. If you are lucky you might even spot the famous Aurora Boreas (Northern Lights). Hiking Ben Nevis itself is not advised in adverse conditions, in good weather it’s still doable for the fit and experienced. The snow capped peaks may look daunting at first, but the views from the top are unbeatable!
Climbers might prefer to bag a Munro, a Corbett or a Graham or two, while the less experienced can take their pick from a large number of low-level walks that are accessible even on the snowiest of days. Walk the River Lochy, which runs right alongside our holiday park here at Ben Nevis Holiday Park, enjoy a leisurely amble along the banks of the Caledonian Canal or explore around Glen Nevis and the miles of quiet forest roads.
If you’re looking for something spectacular yet family-friendly that all ages and abilities can enjoy, the walks around Inchree and Glenrigh Forest are perfect, especially as you can select the route that best suits your party. A scenic 23-minute drive from Ben Nevis Holiday Park skirting along one side of Loch Linnhe takes you to Inchree Falls Car Park. From here you can embark on a number of different routes, but before you head off on your hike, don’t forget to check out the red squirrel feeding station close to the car park!
Another easy going trail to try out is the River Lundie walk, a scenic forestry trail that boasts glimpses of nearby mountain ranges through the branches. The walk starts in the northwest corner of the car park at the furthest point from the Nevis Range Visitor Centre and gondola – next to the High Wire Adventure course. This circular walk takes you through pine forests and across bubbling creeks before returning to the car park – the perfect opportunity to pop into The Pinemarten Cafe to warm your cockles!
After your wintry walk, you’ll be wanting a good dose of warm Scottish hospitality. You’ll find it’s in no short supply around these parts, with Fort William offering some fabulous coffee shops and pubs with great food and drink. If you’re partial to a wee dram, Ben Nevis Distillery is open Monday to Friday all year round (please double-check in advance). We recommend the Tasting Tour followed by some Scottish home cooking in their restaurant.
Remember – it’s essential to be prepared! Winter weather is no joke. However, armed with the right kit and the right knowledge, you’ll have yourself a rewarding walk!
