The Magical Falls of Dochart

It’s as beautiful as it sounds. Really. Just under half an hour away from Tyndrum is home to the magical Falls of Dochart. Being glorious whatever the weather, these falls undoubtedly made it to our list of Things to Do around Tyndrum.

Where is it?

These glorious falls lie in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park in Killin – just a 26-minute drive from Tyndrum. The village has a lovely little gift shop right by the bridge and a selection of places to grab a spot of lunch.

History

The bridge of Dochart was built in 1760 and still stands proudly today to give easily accessible and beautiful views of the falls. Right in the middle of the falls is Innis Bhuidhe, a small island and ancient burial place of the MacNab Clan. The oblong structure is home to 15 graves, 9 of which belong to clan chiefs. A medieval grave slab sticks out from the rest though, suggesting that at least one earlier burial took place here.

Right next door to the falls is the Old Mill, an arts and craft shop. Before that, it was the Breadalbane Folklore Centre and originally, St Fillan’s Mill, which was built to harness the waters of the river all the way back in 1840. What we now know as the Falls of Dochart Inn used to be a blacksmith’s in the late 1800s – things have changed but the falls stay their same old beautiful selves.

Come rain or shine, the Falls of Dochart are a must-visit if you’re after a scenic and peaceful afternoon. Sit on the riverside, enjoy an ice cream or cup of tea and take in the sounds of rushing waters. The falls are particularly beautiful after heavy rainfall – gushes of water roll over the craggy rocks and trickle down the neighbouring mountains.

The Falls of Dochart are a magical sight whatever the weather. And when you stay with us, this hidden gem is practically on your doorstep!
